Making Money On The Internet

Making Money On The Internet

At some point a few years ago, I decided that I liked the idea of making money on the internet. Now that I haven't needed a job in years, I like it even better. I make money online several different ways, all of them carefully considered, so I don't have to be home to operate the business.

There are so many ways of making money on the internet. For example, I know someone who sells laminating machines from a web site, another who sells surveillance cameras and equipment online, and several people who sell ebooks. Below are some of the other possibilities:

1. Paid-subscription sites. These sites have limited public content. To get the good stuff, a visitor has to subscribe. For example, an internet business site might offer unlimited access to its resources, including web site templates, sales letters, and the latest news and techniques, for $10 per month. Build up to a thousand subscribers and you'll be making some money.

2. Sell expertise. Many use a website to sell their offline expertise. Whether a business consultant or a wilderness guide, you can make more money with an online presence.

3. Sell a book. It easier than ever to sell your book without a publisher. Set up a sales site and you can either promote it free using articles, or pay for search traffic.

4. Sell downloadable ebooks and reports. No printing expense, and no shipping. Buyers pay with credit cards and download their purchases - even while you sleep.

5. Sell links. If you have good web sites, people will pay to have links placed there. There are companies online that will arrange the selling of these too.

6. Pay-per-click advertising revenue. This is one of the easiest ways of making money on the internet. Paste that code into your pages and start collecting for clicks. I liked this idea long before I passed the $100 per day mark on my click revenue.

7. Sell handicrafts. Many people sell the things they make online - everything from walking sticks to dog clothing.

8. Make affiliate sales without a web site. Although it has become more difficult, you can still make commissions without a website, by posting links for free in forums, articles, and online classifieds.

9. Sell pixels. Remember the man who sold a million pixels on a web page, at a dollar each, to pay for college (and much more)? Buyers advertised how they wanted with their 100 or 200-pixel space. Then came the buy-a-word sites. Pay for a word to be linked to wherever you like. What's next?

10. Sell affiliate products. When visitors to my backpacking site click on the links there and buy a tent or a sleeping bag, I get paid a 7% commission. This is affiliate marketing, but it works in many other ways, and the commissions range as high as 75%.
1. Sell downloadable CDs you make. For $100, you can get the software to make "brainwave entrainment" Cds, and then sell them online.

12. Sell simple reports. Know how to get a job at a casino, or how to train a cat? Create a ten-page report and sell it online.

13. Design websites. Make your own look good if you want to do this for money, of course.

14. Sell phone consultation. Know how to buy and sell real estate, or make a profitable website? Sell consulting time online.

15. Sell articles. There are places online where you can post your articles for sale, either with complete rights (for a higher price), or sell them repeatedly for one-time non-exclusive use.

16. Write and distribute articles to promote a specific web site, for a fee.

17. Create a free newsletter, and sell your own or affiliate products in each issue.

18. Create and sell graphics. You can sell non-exclusive rights to use them if you want repeat income.

19. Take your MLM business online. Multi-level marketing is alive and well in the internet world.

20. Build mini-sites to promote one affiliate product. A one-to-five page site to on fishing to sell a PDF fishing book that makes you a $8 commission, for example. Put up ten such sites, and make just three sales per day on each, and you'll have a gross income of $7,200 per month.

Sell and ship products. Sell products that don't need to be shipped. Sell advertising. Sell your expertise online. Sell your offline services online. Sell other people's products. Sell your own products. These are just some of the basic categories of online business. Within each of these categories there are dozens of ways of making money on the internet. Why not get started?

Make Money Working From Home

Make Money Working From Home

Two generations ago - for that matter, just one generation ago - there were few alternatives to conventional employment. If you wanted to make money from home 20 years ago, you could do transcription, for example, but you had to deliver it when it was finished. Or you could do telephone soliciting, if you didn't mind people hanging up on you or saying rude things to you over the phone. They really weren't many alternate ways to make a buck at home.

Since the mid-1990s, however, all that has changed. The possibilities for making money from home have grown exponentially and are still growing, with no end in sight.

Let's go back to transcription as an example. There were two ways you could go about doing transcription 10-20 years ago. You could pick up dictation tapes from a client, let's say a doctor, or an insurance adjuster. You then took the tapes back to your home office, transcribed them and returned the transcription to the client. Two trips out of the house were required.

The second method wasn't in the home at all, but in an office. For example, hospitals had central location in the bulding to which they could send their dictation. This was also a virtually impossible field to get into.

Now, with digital recording technology, transcription can be sent to you via the internet. The transcribed material sent back to the client in the same way, and you never need to leave your house. But this is just one way to make money working from home.

The field of Internet marketing is a huge growth industry whether it is in affiliate marketing or direct marketing, where you are selling goods from a website, for example. Let's say that you are a small company with a niche product, or a niche service. This could be anything from custom made zippers to dog booties. Well how are you going to market your products? The least expensive way to market, and market worldwide, is the Internet.

You can make your custom zippers or your dog booties in your home, market them aggressively on the Internet, by contracting to a company that writes copy for ads online, to name just one example.

You have extended the exposure of your company well beyond the boundaries of your state or your country - you are now a global concern. And you have succeeded in showing how to make money working from home. Not only that but you are now self-supporting, and you didn't have to go to work in an office to do it!

Your Website - A Residual Income Opportunity

Your Website - A Residual Income Opportunity

A classic residual income opportunity could be an investment in dividend paying stocks, or a licensing fee that you get for decades for something you invented, or royalties for a novel that you wrote. But what if you don’t have that much money to invest, you don’t have an invention to license and you are not a writer? In that case, you might want to look to the opportunities available online. Of the many out there, we will cover one here: A basic review website. But first, let’s look at a basic definition.

Residual income is essentially income that continues to come in long after the initial efforts that created it have stopped (or at least have become minimal). You work as hard as you need to in order to develop the income stream, and then it flows on its own. This is more than a nice idea - it is a real possibility more than ever thanks to the internet.

For example, my wife and I have websites that we essentially stopped any serious work on years ago, yet they still produce hundreds of dollars of income monthly. Granted, we try to update them occasionally, but the work is minimal (and optional if we want to risk a slow decline of the income stream). I might have spent five hours in the last year on one site, for example, and yet it generated at least a thousand dollars for each of those hours.

The basic idea here is to target a niche with decent search traffic. That might be anything from how to train a dog to making money with crafts. Build a site that has a dozen or more pages of high-quality information, each targeting one particular keyword or keyword phrase. For example, if there are a thousand people monthly searching "make money with crafts," you would have a page about just that. It would be optimized by mentioning the search term "make money with crafts," several times on the page, including in the title, the first paragraph and near the end of the page.

Then you would get links to your site. You can start by asking owners of other related sites to exchange links. There are dozens of other ways to get incoming links. You can learn some of them from the e-book Fifty Ways To get Traffic, a bonus that comes with You Can Make Money Writing. The process of properly optimizing a site and marketing it is beyond the scope of this page, but you can learn that as you go and some of it is covered on other pages of this site as well.

To truly automate the site, making future work as minimal as possible, you’ll want a simple affiliate product or program to promote, so you won’t have any need to directly deal with visitors or customers.

You’ll just get a commission whenever you visitors click over to the site you promote and buy something. Even simpler is using any of the pay-per-click programs that pay you for each click on an advertisement.

Finally, it helps to update a site from time to time, but this too can be very minimal in terms of time - if you prepare everything from the start. For example, you can have other write pages for you for less than $10 each, and have a file of them ready to be loaded over the years one at a time every month or two. You also can have the "Tip of the Month" change each month - again from a file that you prepare in advance. Done right, your continuing work can be as little as a few minutes per month, making this residual income opportunity one of the best.

Freelance Writing Opportunities Online

It used to be that freelance writing opportunities were relatively rare. There were only so many magazines that would pay for freelance work, and a lot of writers to compete against. Then the internet came along. The bad news is that the pay is generally much lower online, but the good news is that there are more ways to get aid than ever before, and you don’t have to be a professional writer.

Freelance Writing Opportunities - Two Examples

One way to get paid for your writing is to sell what I call "top of your head articles." These are articles that are no more than six to ten paragraphs (500 to 800 words), and can be written without research. All of us have knowledge in various areas of life, and can say something useful in such short articles. If you know how to travel cheap, for example, you might do a "list article" with six ways to save money when going overseas. This page is an example of an article written in twenty-five minutes (and is less than 600 words), which - had I not written it myself - I would have paid $10 to $20 for.

Articles like these are purchased for anywhere from $8 to $40, to be used either as pages on a website or for distribution to promote a website. Your name will not be on the article, because you generally sell the rights. Obviously, given the low pay ($15 per article is common), you’ll want to learn to crank out these articles in less than an hour, and preferably less than thirty minutes if you want to make any decent money for your efforts.

You sell articles like these on freelance sites (search and you’ll find many good ones). Ideally, once you have some practice and feel comfortable writing on many different topics, you can contract to write a dozen articles or more at a time. That way you can be efficient enough to make a decent paycheck for a day’s work (and yes, with practice, you can write a dozen articles in a day).

Another freelance writing opportunity is in simply selling your writing online to blogs and sites that want quality content. In this kind of situation you should be paid a bit more, and your name will remain on the article. Many site owners will even buy articles that you intend to publish in print magazines, since they do not directly compete with these.

This is a tougher way to get started, so you may want to wait until you have some practice with the short articles mentioned above. Also, to make decent money, you’ll want to freelance for at least several different blogs and websites.

This is a good option if you have some specialized knowledge. For example, if you know a lot about how to make money in stock market investing, you might work for two or three sites in that niche. But even if you do not have any particular expertise you can research almost anything online and write about it.

Those are just two of the freelance writing opportunities that are available online. For more, go sign up for the free online writing course, or click the banner below to buy the e-book You Can Make Money Writing (also available as an Amazon Kindle book).

The Best Home Business Opportunity

The Best Home Business Opportunity

What would the benefits and features of the best home business opportunity be. How about a low start-up cost to keep your investment and risk low? Under a thousand dollars would make it an opportunity that most people could take advantage of, and under a few hundred would be even better. The business I have in mind fits that criteria.

It would also be nice if you could star a business without years of training in a given field. If you could start and then learn what you need to know as you go, that would be ideal. This business fits that description as well.

It would also be nice if you could work entirely at home, with no need to visit clients or go to an office. And being able to run your business from anywhere in the world - wouldn’t that be great as well? And what if once your home business was up and running you could make your own schedule, or even take weeks off without any major issues?

The home business opportunity I have in mind fits all these criteria. It is the business I am in, and doing well with, by the way. It is internet publishing. Specifically, it is the creating of informational websites that don’t require you to stock or ship products. Provide good information and make money from the advertising.

I have a brief course that covers some of this, based on excerpts from my e-book You Can Make Money Writing. You can sign up for the free lessons here: Online Writing Course

How To Get Rich Online

I have read many articles about how to get rich online. I'm not quite there yet myself, although we are making far more money than any of my dozens of jobs ever provided. Here are some of my thoughts on making money on the internet.

First of all, there is no one sure recipe for success. I know people who make good money buying and selling domain names, something I not only have no idea how to do, but also don't have the right mind set for. I know another businessman who sells a million dollars annually in products online. I think I could do that, but I have always hated the idea of having to ship things and - in his case - hire employees.

My wife and I have a simpler formula. We create websites full of great information, mostly about things that are of some interest to us (fortunately I have a lot of interests). We have websites about money, real estate, backpacking, brainpower, meditation, Spanish lessons and more.

To make money with these sites we simply have pay-per-click advertising and links to affiliate products that we make a commission on. No products to ship, no retail customers to deal with, and we make money while we are sleeping or on vacation. We like that. I have also been selling ebooks for a few years now, so I do have to check my email when I can to resolve any customer issues with downloads.

Of course to make big money with this design, you need big traffic. For us, the single best way to get that has been by promoting the sites with articles that we distribute through article directories. That process is detailed in my ebook You Can Make Money Writing.

How to get rich online? Although we are not yet rich, our own experience is that you get there by consistent work. We have managed to keep growing despite the current recession. How? Here's a simple plan:

1. Keep learning.

2. Keep trying new things.

3. Keep repeating the things that work.

Some Bad News?

I don't want to discourage anyone from trying to get rich online, but I do want to tell you what you can expect. First of all, although it's getting easier to get started online, it's also more difficult to make money. There is just a lot more competition. I'm glad we started when we did (late 2004). There are still great opportunities, but be prepared to plan long-term and be patient.

You'll see a lot of simple explanation of how to make big money online. For example, once you have a website, you'll open emails that say something like this: "Just link to my product on your site or introduce it to the people on your mailing list and you can make thousands of dollars per month." That will be followed by some simple math: You make a commission of $30 on a $50 product, for example, and "all you have to do make $55,000 annually is sell just five each day.

The truth is that there are plenty of good products that offer commissions like that (ebooks and other downloadable products offer the highest-percentage commissions). And yes, if you sell just five each day you'll make $55,000 each year on that one product. Find a dozen more products like that and do the same and... well, getting rich online sounds simple, doesn't it?

Reality check: It will be rare to find products that convert more than 1% of the traffic you send to them into buyers, despite the hype. You also will be lucky to have more than two of every hundred visitors to your site click on any given link. So if you have 750,000 visitors to your site this month, 15,000 of them are likely to click that link and of those 150 are likely to buy the product - 5 per day on average.

Now, more realistically, if you have 15,000 visitors monthly after building your site presence up for months, perhaps 300 will click that link and 3 will buy, netting you $75 for the month or $900 for the year from that product.

I don't mean to discourage, but to prevent discouragement when you look and wonder why with thousands of visitors you're not making money. In most niches you'll need at least tens of thousands of visits monthly to make a decent living, and hundreds of thousands to get rich. That is possible. We have hundreds of thousands of people visit our sites every month. But it took a few years to build to that level.

How do you get rich online? Start right now and keep working at it. Difficult or not, it sure beats having a job.

Five Internet Business Opportunities

there are always internet business opportunities that you can buy into. Most are either cheap pre-packaged websites that you can buy for a few hundred dollars or fully developed websites that can costs tens of thousands of dollars. The problem with the "cheapies" is that they are just a site. I can put a new website up in less than six hours, complete with a dozen pages. But it won't necessarily produce any income at all.

Buying a developed site at least assures you that you'll have money coming in from the start. But there is no guarantee that it will keep coming in. In fact, it's possible that the seller was paying for much of the traffic and not making a profit to start with.

So with those two unexciting options out of the way, what other internet business opportunities are there? Here are some that will require some work on your part (real businesses actually do require real work), but will not cost much to start.

Sell Things You Buy

You might think that you need some serious cash to get started selling things online, but not necessarily. It costs you nothing to open an account at Ebay. A bit of research about what things sell for there and you could just spend a hundred dollars rummage sale shopping for items you can triple your money on. Build the business from your profits.

Sell Things You Don't Own

There are a number of companies that will drop ship items for you. That means you sell them on your website and collect the money, then forward the order and the wholesale price to the manufacturer, and they ship it to your customer. You never have to deal with packaging and shipping, and customers can even send returns back to their address.

Writing Service

You can get paid to post on some blogs. Search "pay for post" or "paid to post" in a search engine to find those that are available now. I tried this once and was paid $8 after I submitted a four-paragraph opinion piece that took fifteen minutes to write and submit. I wouldn't bother again for those wages, but it's nice to know what's available just in case.

You also can bid on writing projects at sites like Elance.com. If you go look right now, you'll see that some of the people are making a decent living just writing for others. The problem with this type of business is that you are limited in what you make by how many hours you can work. that's why I prefer the next internet business opportunity.

Informational Website Business

My wife and I make websites with great information on a variety of topics. We promote them with my articles that I distribute through article directories. The income is from advertising, affiliate products and ebooks that I sell. What I like about this model is that even though we work hard, when we stop working to go visit family overseas for a few weeks, the money keeps coming in day and night. For more about our business, read my ebook, You Can make Money Writing.

Buy and Sell Domain Names

There a couple different ways people make money buying and selling domain names. They all start with buying decent names - often ones that have expired and just become available. Some people go for the more expensive names that they hope to sell at auctions for thousands more than they paid. This can mean a fair amount of speculation and holding some names for years.

Others buy decent expired names for the cost of registering them ($10 or so), and then quickly auction them off on Ebay or through other means. The idea here is to turn over a lot of names for a profit of perhaps $20 to $200 each. If you do it right you'll lose money on a few but average a decent profit overall.

One of the more interesting internet business opportunities is to buy a domain and develop it for sale. You should have a template and a formula that you follow for this. For example, for each domain you buy you might put up a site with a dozen pages, submit it to a few hundred search engines and directories (there are services that do this for you for as little as $40). Then you sell this "website" for a couple hundred dollars, saving the buyer the trouble of starting from scratch.
